Asus Zenfone Max (May 2016) Review: Maximizing Its Budget Phone

Seeing the popularity of the budget phones and the lack of performance in the first Zenfone Max, Asus has updated its Max line for Maximum profits. In fact, the word Max is so commonly used that movie buffs and gamers (like me) conjure up images of Mad Max from Mad Max movies, Max Damage from Carmageddon car games and “(for) maximum pleasure” from Erotica Con…err I digress.

Anyhow, we look at Asus Zenfone Max, is this the Max upgrade we were waiting for? We analyse the upside and downside of this.

Faster processor
The older Zenfone Max had a slower Snapdragon 410 SoC processor and it showed. The new updated model has the Snapdragon 615 Quad-core 1.5 GHz Cortex-A53. This is typical of phones of this class; what you get is a proven performer in apps and games with reliable functionality, though don’t expect it to blow the socks off. This perhaps is the single most important upgrade of the Zenfone Max line-up with repercussions (more on that later). Click to see detailed comparison of specifications.

More memory
Zenfone Max gets a good upgrade from 16GB to 32GB for internal storage which is awesome. Over time, you’ll need the extra memory and it’s always better to have it internal than external through MicroSD which the phone provides anyway. 2GB is plenty of RAM, though there is new additional 3GB model for Rs. 3000 more which clearly isn’t worth the price.

Battery
The battery is the biggest selling point of the phone. 5000 mAh is crazy, due to the faster processor (perhaps lesser optimization in it?) the battery will not last as long as the original version. In real life terms, if the original lasted with regular usage for 2-n-half to 3 days without charge, now expect 2 days or a little lesser with the same kind of usage.

The same awesome reverse charging option of charging other devices is retained with an additional accessory. This frankly is quite a useful option to have considering the device’s battery by itself is equivalent to two mobile batteries.

Charger still sucks
For a phone with such a large capacity battery, Asus has included only a 1A charger which regular phones with half the battery size come with. This means Max will take 5 hours for a full charge! Perfect to keep it for charging at night really speaking but horrible when using during the day. Consider getting a 2A charger which will reduce the time to half.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow
The new Max comes with the latest version of Android 6.0 which is always good to have. Marshmallow’s new app permissions, Do Not Disturb mode, etc makes its debut. Expect the old Max to get an update soon.

Other changes
The camera interface has been streamlined a bit, though the camera is still the same, snappy as ever. The phone’s look remains unchanged, however, this time around Asus has added blue and the much nicer orange colour (which we tested).

So is the Zenfone Max worth it?
Most certainly yes. The most important upgrade was its “not-so-perky” performance and the phone got it. However, it did come at the cost of battery life which no one is going to complain about. Rs. 3,000 for 1GB more is too much to ask for and would have been a nice surprise to have it at same price.

Of course, it can be argued it that it doesn't have Full HD 1080 screen where as other phones in the same price bracket do, but remember with “Great screen resolution comes greatly less battery life” (what Uncle Ben would have said if Peter Parker wanted a new phone). The battery life would have reduced and therefore “Max” moniker would have been rendered useless to Zenfone “Min”- keeping up with the Joneses. 

We are glad Asus stuck to its guns, for bigger screen whiners and fingerprint fondlers, you always have Asus Zenfone Selfie.

Asus Launches New Zenfone Max At Rs.9,999

ASUS today launched the new Zenfone Max in India. The smartphone features a 5.5 inch HD (1280 x 720) IPS display with full-screen lamination and ASUS TruVivid technology. 
The new ZenFone Max sports a 13 Megapixel, f/2.0-aperture rear camera with the ASUS PixelMaster 2.0 technology and dual-LED flash. It also features Laser Auto Focus technology that helps focus on an object in 0.03 seconds. ZenFone Max’s front camera is a 5 Megapixel, f/2.0-aperture camera for selfies.

The new Zenfone Max is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 Octa-Core processor and provides an option to opt for a 2GB or 3GB RAM. The internal memory of the phone has now been increased to 32GB, in addition to an expandable memory of up to 64GB. 

The device houses a powerful 5000mAh battery and is also capable of being a power bank for other gadgets. The new Zenfone Max boasts of an extremely thin body that measures only 5.2 mm. The company claims that it has 914.4 hours of standby time or 37.5 hours of 3G talk time. It is backed by the latest Android M 6.0.1 OS and ASUS ZenUI.

The Zenfone Max with 2GB RAM costs Rs. 9,999 and can be pre-ordered on Flipkart while Zenfone Max with 3GB RAM is available for Rs. 12,999 and can be purchased from Amazon, Snapdeal and Flipkart. 

The 3GB RAM variant will also be available at ASUS Exclusive stores and all other retail stores across India, at a later date. The handset will be available in three interesting colours – black, orange and blue. We have received the handset for review. Stay tuned.

Asus Xonar U7 Review: A good sound upgrade with driver issues

I was looking for an upgrade for my system from my onboard audio on my motherboard. Of course, anything is better than “onboard audio” most say and they are quite right unless you have really high-end motherboards with really good sound in them. No luck there for me, however I made a checklist of what I want from a new sound card.

- Good clean sound, not audiophile grade
- Good mic boost for gaming
- An analogue volume knob, I love those
- Portable so that I can attach to my laptop when needed, therefore internal cards are out

Surprisingly Asus Xonar U7 ticks all the above points and does a good job at it too.

Performance:
Asus Xonar U7 sports 192kHz/24-bit high-definition sound with a 114dB signal-to-analog ratio (SNR). This means that what you get is a clean sound, no distortions and not prone to line noise caused due to other powered components like CPU, GPU, rotating HDD’s etc especially since the card isn’t in the computer. Interestingly Asus is using two DAC’s (Digital to Analogue Converter), one from Cirrus Logic CS4398 for the headphones and Cirrus Logic CS4362 for the speaker out.

What I liked particularly in the Xonar U7 is that it didn’t colour the sound at all. All the instruments sounded right and the muffled sound from onboard audio instantly cleared up. You’ll hear subtleties in music which you might have missed. This was tested with a good pair of Audio Technica ATH-M50s. Xonar U7’s can easily drive your cans between 32 or 64 ohm, those with 150 or 300 ohms headphones ought to look elsewhere, after all impressing audiophiles isn't aim of this soundcard.

One thing to note, those who’d like to hear crystal clear sound, audio cards that bring about that specific ‘snap’ to the sound, will be disappointed by the Xonar U7. If you are that class of audience, higher end audiophile DAC’s is the way to go for you.

Software:
Surprisingly, the volume didn’t sound as loud as I would’ve expected in spite of the high impedance setting. This brings me to software which is excellent and at the same time plain sucky in its implementation. More on both these points later.

Oh god, Asus Xonar U7’s old interface is down-right amateurish

Hell yeah, the new interface breathes new life

Asus has released brand new overhauled drivers which are much better than the previous design. You can find everything you want in one quick panel. There are very useful pre-set profiles to the left which can easily help with EQ as well as clear up voice if aren’t too eager to play around with the sliders and knobs.

Asus Xonar U7’s DTH suite Rocks!

Asus has also included DTH V4 suite (Dobly Digital Home Theatre) which is much better at enhancing the sound than the included Asus drivers. This does colour the sound depending on the setting, however the most important function I felt was the “Volume Leveler” which greatly enhanced the volume level, now I needed go to only till 50% max to comfortably listen to music while giving me enough room to handle movies with lower level volume.

While everything did improve no doubt from the base onboard audio, the one essential thing that really sucked was that Asus Xonar U7 mic doesn't work with steam. WHAT!!?? Steam is the best thing to happen to PC gaming and it doesn't work. The older drivers worked just fine with Steam, but the software interface sucked. After wasting many man hours on this, I realised if I reverted only to the older mic driver, I could use it with Steam while retaining the newer software. Yay! But then none of the mic enhancements worked….AARRGHHH! This honestly has to be the suckiest implementation by Asus and isn't something that anybody ought to be dealing with when buying a sound card of this grade, quality and price.

Would I recommend it?
Yes, definitely would. Overall you’ll love it, if not, you need an audiophile grade sound card, Xonar U7 isn’t aimed at you, or if you are a frustrated gamer that can’t team talk on Steam just because Asus hasn’t implemented it well. I’m seriously hoping Asus will fix this issue in its next software/driver upgrade.

ASUS has announced that ZenTalk, a forum designed for ZenFans to interact and discuss their ideas about ASUS mobile products has reached 70000 subscribers in India. ZenFans  discuss anything related to ASUS' mobile products including ZenFones, PadFones, FonePads, ZenPad series and ZenUI on the forum. 

ZenTalk was first launched in September 2014 and has 284,015 active users globally. In India, the forum was launched officially in March 2015 and has seen a tremendous response since then.

ASUS Announces the Availability of ZenPad in India

After having launched the ZenPad amongst much fanfare at Zen Festival in August, ASUS today announced the availability of ZenPad in India. It is available in three variants – ZenPad 8.0, ZenPad 7.0 and ZenPad C7.0. Customers will be able to purchase them at ASUS exclusive stores and on Flipkart. ZenPad 7.0 will be available immediately and ZenPad 8.0 and ZenPad C 7.0 will be available from October end. 

ZenPad 8.0: It has a display size of 20.3 centimetres and is powered by a Qualcomm MSM892964-bit Octa Core Processor and 16GB in-built memory. The device has an 8 MP auto-focus main camera and features larger aperture, pixel master camera for brighter photos, zero shutter lag and manual mode support, and a 2 MP front camera with 140 degree selfie panorama. It is available in two colours - Obsidian Black and Aurora Metallic. The ZenPad 8.0 is priced at Rs 17,999 with audio cover and Rs 14,999 without audio cover.

ASUS launches Windows 10 QHD laptop with flagship ZenBook UX305LA

ASUS has announced the launch of its first premium Windows 10 laptop with its flagship ZenBook UX305LA. The Ultrabook will be powered by a full range of Intel processors i.e. Core M, Core i5 & Core i7 and will be available in multiple colour options like black, white & gold. With QHD display, 8GB RAM, 512GB solid-state disk and battery life of up to 10 hours, ZenBook UX305LA is the ultimate ultra portable laptop for power users. 

The ultraportable laptop has been currently launched with Intel Core i7 processor and Intel Core i5 version of the same will be launched by end of this quarter. It sports a 13.3-inch display and QHD+ resolution of 3200 x 1800 pixels.

ASUS Smartphones to be manufactured in India

ASUS will soon be local manufacturing its smartphones in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh. ASUS will start its manufacturing operations with Zenfone 2 Laser model which will soon be followed by ZenFone Go. 

The company aims to manufacture 150,000 smartphones per month by the end of the current financial year which will account for almost 80% of sales in India. 

Last month, at the first edition of Zen Festival in India, the company launched its brand new offerings - Zenfone Selfie, Zenfone 2 Laser and Zenfone 2 Deluxe. 

The ASUS Zenfone 2 Laser has a high-definition (HD) 1280 x 720-pixel resolution. It sports a 5 MP front camera and 13 MP rear camera with laser- assisted auto-focus that allows the consumers to lock the focus on an object in as low as 0.3 seconds. The phone comes with Anti-Scratch Corning Gorilla Glass 4 and has dual microphone with noise cancellation. It supports full HD video recording 1080p@30fps capture with video stabilization and one-touch still-capture facility. 

The ZenFone Go is a 3G device and has a LCD display with an anti-fingerprint coating, a high resolution 1280 x 720 HD IPS display, sporting a pixel density of 294ppi.

It has a 5-inch LCD display with an anti-finger print coating with 1280 x 720 HD IPS display, sporting a pixel density of 294ppi. It will be available in 3 colours - Black, White and Red.

ASUS Zenfone Selfie Available On Flipkart At Rs 17,999

ASUS has confirmed the availability of its latest Zenfone Selfie online on Flipkart, starting today. The Zenfone Selfie was launched at the Zen Festival last month in Delhi. It is available in Pure White, Chic Pink or Aqua Blue colors. 

Zenfone Selfie’s front-facing Pixel Master camera has a huge 13MP resolution and an f/2.2-aperture, 88-degree wide-angle lens.
