Review: Oppo R7 Lite- A premium mid-budget beast

Chinese smartphone maker Oppo had launched the Oppo R7 Lite and we got our hands on it. The Oppo R7 Lite is a feature-rich smartphone in the very competitive sub-Rs 20,000 segment. The Oppo R7 Lite is its latest attempt to attract sales in the mid-range segment. The R7 Lite is just a stripped down version of the premium R7 Plus.

Look and feel:
The Oppo R7 Lite is quite a gorgeous smartphone.it will delight you with its sleek, sturdy design which also offers a comfortable grip. While the R7 Lite might be among the slimmest phones, it is definitely not among the lightest. The rear camera protrudes a bit which might attract scratches, something Oppo had to trade off for slimness.

The display gets a 2.5D arc treatment which means the edges are curved a bit for a smoother feel. In the front, we have a 5-inch HD Amoled display (720x1280) that's protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3. The volume rocker and power buttons are placed on opposite sides. The SIM and microSD card tray sits on the right while the headphone socket and Micro-USB port take their place on the top and bottom respectively. You get a notification LED hidden in the upper left corner. The capacitive buttons at the bottom are sadly not backlit.

Specifications and software:
The core specifications are very much in line with the Moto X Play. You get an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 SoC, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of onboard storage, microSD card support of up to 128GB, and 4G LTE support. You also get Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, USB OTG and GPS. There's no NFC or FM radio. The R7 Lite uses a hybrid Dual-SIM system so you can either have two SIM cards or one SIM and a microSD card.

The Oppo R7 Lite runs Colour OS 2.1 which is a heavily modified skin for Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. Not much has changed, visually at least, since we first saw it running on the Oppo N1. There are ton of possible customisations, from transition effects to themes.

Camera:
The 13-megapixel camera has a wide range of professional modes. There is the slow shutter mode that increases exposure time to capture fast-moving objects better, while the Ultra HD mode upscales an ordinary shot by boosting the pixel count and the super macro is best for close-ups. As far as performance goes, both the cameras were able to capture colours and details quite nicely, Even in low light, they manage to offer decent pictures with very much less noise. Tried a few modes and the resulting images were impressive. Both phones feature 13-megapixel auto-focus rear shooters with f/2.2 apertures with laser AF technology to improve focus  and dual-LED flashes, and 8-megapixel front-facing cameras with f/2.4 apertures, which also gave good results.

Verdict:
The Oppo R7 Lite turned out to be quite a firecracker in a slim package. The aluminium build and overall finish are superb, the display produces rich and vibrant colours, overall system performance is speedy, and it has good battery life as well. It also doesn't hurt that it's slim and lightweight. The R7 Lite smartphone costs Rs 17,990 in the market. If you are willing to pay extra for getting a premium experience in the mid-range segment then go ahead and buy it.
